The sea arrives in the morning. By noon it is on the coals.
A shack of corrugated sheet and tree shade inside the Grupo Sportivo de Carcavelos football ground. In the display, the fish that came in this morning. At the grill, Gonçalo, over charcoal his father taught him to light. Nobody here will explain a concept to you. They will ask whether you want your bream whole or butterflied.
No concept. Plenty of passion, as the name demands.
Do not look for it on the Marginal. Cabana das Paixões hides behind the stands of the Carcavelos football ground, leaning on the Quinta dos Ingleses, with a mural on the wall and a fish eyeing you from the display at the door. Tables in a row, paper cloths, aluminium platters that have seen more sea bass than most fishermen. It is a tasca. We say so with our chest out.
The Brito family took the house on in 2003. The father ran the grill for almost twenty years. In 2022 he handed the tongs to his son Gonçalo, who had passed through ISEG and the Tivoli and Vila Galé hotels before working out that his place was right here, with smoke in his eyes. He updated what needed updating and left alone what was already right: fish from the lota and a bill that frightens nobody.

From the counter to the coals, no stops on the way
Sea bass, gilt-head bream, cuttlefish, turbot, salt cod à lagareiro with the olive oil singing. In summer, sardines until the smoke reaches Oeiras. Pick yours from the display, point, and off it goes to the grill with coarse salt and nothing else, because a good fish does not need a lawyer. It reaches the table the way it always has on this coast: boiled potatoes, greens, olive oil and lemon. The regulars call it peixinho, little fish. It is affection, and it is earned.
Prices from the July 2026 menu. To start there is bread, olives and fresh cheese; the couvert is whatever lands on the table, and if you do not want it just say so. Grouper is sold by weight and deserves a hungry table.
Come before noon. Yes, before.
The 12:00 queue
Service is first come, first served, and the place fills the minute the gate opens. The popular fish goes early; whoever arrives at 13:00 on a Sunday has heard "it's gone" more than once. Show up 15 to 20 minutes before noon, or after 13:30 in an adventurous mood. At weekends the queue is longer, and in a better mood.
Parking is easy
The club's car park is right at the door: free, no barrier, no ticket, and room for everyone, even on a sunny Sunday. The one place on the Linha where you arrive at 12:00 and still get to choose your spot. By train, get off at Carcavelos and walk up in five minutes; the smell guides you the last stretch.
Cash or MB Way
The house takes cash and MB Way. Foreign cards do not work, and the terminal will not change its mind for you. Visitors from abroad, stop at an ATM first. Ask for the bill at the table, in your own time; nobody here walks you to the door.

Monday is the charcoal's day off.
The Portuguese way
Say bom dia on the way in; it is the password. Order the house wine by the jug and never be shy about asking for more bread for the juices. The fish head is the most contested part of the table; it goes to whoever asks first. Lunch here is the afternoon's plan. If Carcavelos are training, the show comes included.
What the smoke knows and we did not invent
A sea that has fed people for centuries
Cascais was a fishing village by the 12th century and, when D. Pedro I made it a town in 1364, was already sending fish to Lisbon. In 1427 King João I excused the fishermen here from serving on the galleys, because without them the capital went without lunch. The court came for sea bathing in 1870 and the train arrived in 1889. Kings changed and swimwear changed; the sardine, the species named most often in this coast's medieval paperwork, stayed exactly where it was.
Sardines, queen of summer
The saying goes that on São João the sardine drips onto the bread, and that a sardine without bread is a thief's meal. In Lisbon it is the snack of Santo António on 13 June, basil pot beside it. At the Cabana the season is taken as seriously as at any arraial: coarse salt, live coals and a slice of bread doing what bread was born to do.
A club a century old
Grupo Sportivo de Carcavelos was founded in 1921 and the shack lives inside its ground, the Quinta Nova. You eat with the pitch behind you and, now and then, the ball lands closer to the table than it should. Probably the only tasca on the Linha where you can whistle at the referee between the bread and the fish.
